Founded in 2011 in Houston, Texas, The Suffers quickly built a devoted local following before breaking out internationally in 2015 with their extraordinary debut EP, Make Some Room. The release led to high-profile performances on Late Show with David Letterman and NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series. In 2016, the band followed up with a self-titled full-length album that earned widespread acclaim and star-making appearances at the Newport Folk Festival and on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. By the time their 2018 sophomore album, Everything Here, arrived, The Suffers had firmly established themselves as critical and festival favorites. NPR praised the project for showcasing "the multidimensional, multicultural possibilities of their take on soul," while The Guardian called it an "adventurous" collection blending '70s R&B, disco, jazz, and contemporary gospel. Rolling Stone hailed it as "an inspired vision of roots music."
Their latest release, It Starts With Love, is their most critically acclaimed work to date. The album features a collaboration with Oscar-nominated, legendary songwriter Diane Warren, and was mixed by Black Pumas guitarist and acclaimed producer Adrian Quesada. The Suffers are currently wrapping up their fourth studio album and will be playing select dates in 2025 to preview new music.
